North Carolina auto insurance requirements

North Carolina now requires at least $50,000 bodily injury liability per person, $100,000 per accident, and $50,000 property damage liability. The state also requires uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.

Worth knowing: North Carolina increased its minimum liability limits for new and renewed policies effective July 1, 2025.

What makes North Carolina different?

The higher 50/100/50 minimums are relatively recent, so older articles quoting 30/60/25 are outdated for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025.

Coverage to consider beyond the minimum

Meeting a state's minimum requirement does not necessarily mean you have enough protection for your circumstances. Depending on the policy and state, shoppers may also compare higher liability limits, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist protection, medical or personal-injury coverage, rental reimbursement and roadside assistance.

What can affect your price?

Insurance companies can use different underwriting and rating methods, subject to state law. Your location, driving history, vehicle, selected limits and deductibles, household drivers, prior claims and available discounts can all influence a quote. Because companies do not necessarily price the same risk identically, comparing multiple options can be useful.

How to compare policies

  1. Compare quotes using the same coverage limits and deductibles.
  2. Look beyond premium and review exclusions, endorsements and optional coverages.
  3. Check the insurer and agency information before purchasing.
  4. Ask about discounts that may apply to your household.
  5. Confirm the effective date before replacing or cancelling existing coverage.
